Summary:

My name is Carlos Ohn. I studied English Literature and Classics at Georgetown University and received my Master of Arts in Teaching from the Johns Hopkins University School of Education in 2017. I’ve taught in the public school for 5 years as an elementary level teacher, and I have also taught for over 3 years in a Classical Christian School in Maryland. I love working with students, sharing with them my love for the Lord, and building in them a thoroughly Christian worldview. I currently teach 6th graders in Literature, Geography, Bible, Writing, and Grammar. I also lead a whittling club for 6th grade boys. I’m looking to relocate my family to a place where I can continue to work with students in a Classical Christian School and build up the next generation of believers.

Top 5 Books: 1. Huckleberry Finn
2. The Odyssey
3. Beowulf
4. As You Like It
5. Pride and Prejudice

Top 3 Books: 1. Man in the Dark: A Romance by Douglas Wilson. I read this because it was one of the few Douglas Wilson fiction books I had not read. Like some of his other ones, I found good wit, interesting characters, and fun storytelling.

2. Code of the Woosters by P.G. Wodehouse. I read this one because I wanted a good laugh in the evenings when I was reading with my wife. Wodehouse did not disappoint.

3. Empire of Bones (Ashtown Burials #3) by N.D. Wilson. I occasionally read Jr. fiction books to see what I can suggest to my 6th graders that would be edifying and imagination-building. This was the third book in the series. I had read the 100 Cupboards series a year before, and this one was next on my list. A very fun read; made for an excellent recommendation.

Most Influential Books: 1. Till We Have Faces by C.S. Lewis.
2. Man of the House by C.R. Wiley
3. Here I Stand: A Life of Martin Luther by Roland Bainton
4. The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien
5. The Chronicles of Narnia by C.S. Lewis
6. Five English Reformers by J.C. Ryle
7. The Case for Classical Christian Education by Douglas Wilson
8. Wordly Saints: The Puritans As They Really Were by Leland Ryken
9. Baptism is Not Enough by John Crawford

Preferred Denomination Type: Reformed

Current Church: Christ Reformed Evangelical Church

Current Church Denomination: Communion of Reformed Evangelical Churches

Current Church Membership: Yes

Current Church Attendance: Weekly

Support of Traditional Marriage: Yes

Theology: 1. Reformed
2. Covenant Theology
3. Five Solas of the Reformation
4. Confessional
5. Westminsterian
6. Likes R.C. Sproul
7. Inerrancy and sufficiency of Scripture
8. Paedobaptist
9. Presbyterian

Belief in the inerrancy of Scripture?: Yes

Notes on Scripture: 1. The inerrancy of Scripture further means that God’s Word contains no errors.
2. Scripture principally teaches what man is to believe concerning God and what duties God requires of man.
3. Because Scripture is inerrant, Scripture alone is sufficient to understand who God is in his revealed person and what His will for man to obey.
4. Nothing can be added to nor detracted from God’s Word.

Additional Information

Additional classical training: My classical training consists in on-the-job training in a Classical Christian school for 3+ years, undergoing observations and receiving feedback. It also consists of reading books about classical education, such as Narration by Jason Barney, The Core and The Question by Leigh Bortins, and implementing these strategies in my classroom. I have also attended a Repairing the Ruins Conference and have watched other lectures on the subject of classical teaching.

Why I want to teach at a classical school: I believe that education is key to building the next generation and culture of Christians who will carry their faith into every area of life and build God’s kingdom. I’ve experienced the failure of secular government education and have seen the bitter fruit that such seeds bear in our secularized society. I’ve also seen the sweet fruit that comes from the seeds of truth, goodness, beauty, and love for God planted through classical Christian education. There is no comparison. God has put a desire in my heart to raise the next generation of Christians, building them up to see Christ’s reign over every aspect of life, and to train them to glorify God wherever they go. I want to work in a Christian school because I believe this is the plot of earth God has given me to till, and I want to bear fruit from it to His glory.

Final thoughts: I have a wonderful wife named Kimberly and a beautiful little girl named Rowynn, who is 10 months old.
