Interests and Philosophy

Hobbies, Interests, and Family:

Top 5 Books: 1. City of God, Augustine
2. Odyssey, Homer
3. Paradise Lost, John Milton
4. Institutes of the Christian Religion, John Calvin
5. The Republic, Plato

Top 3 Books: 1. That Hideous Strength, C.S. Lewis. This book was helpful in understanding that we live in an embattled cosmos. There is no neutral ground in the universe, and Christians today must live ready, in the strength of Christ, to fight a spiritual war against the powers of darkness.
2. The Hobbit, J.R.R. Tolkien. I loved this book because the Hobbit’s contentedness contrasts with the dragon’s greed, showing there is value in song and cheer far above hoarded gold. Tolkien has been helpful for me in understanding the power of moral formation through story.
3. The Odyssey, Homer. I wanted to read one of the foundational works in classic fiction, and found the themes of home, suffering, and perseverance interesting in conversation with a Christian view of the good life.

Most Influential Books: 1. Till We have Faces, C.S. Lewis
2. Lord of the Rings, J.R.R. Tolkien
3. The Tragical History of Doctor Faustus, Christopher Marlowe
4. Kingdom Through Covenant, Peter Gentry and Stephen Wellum

Preferred Denomination Type: Reformed, Baptist

Current Church: Parkway Baptist Church

Current Church Denomination: Southern Baptist

Current Church Membership: Yes

Current Church Attendance: Weekly

Support of Traditional Marriage: Yes

Theology: I lean towards a covenantal baptist perspective. I would describe myself as broadly shaped by the reformed tradition, and ground my beliefs in the authority and sufficiency of Scripture. In my biblical-theological approach, I emphasize the unity of the canon and of God’s redemptive work in Christ throughout history. I affirm the historic doctrines of the Christian faith, and would say the Reformed tradition has most influenced my views on Scripture, soteriology, and sovereignty.

Belief in the inerrancy of Scripture?: Yes

Notes on Scripture: Infallibility means that Scripture is wholly authoritative and trustworthy in all matters of faith and practice. Inerrancy means that Scripture is wholly trustworthy in all it intends to communicate. I would affirm both of these, as well as the fuller explanation found in the Chicago Statement on Biblical Inerrancy.

Additional Information

Additional classical training: While I have not personally had experience with classical training with a classic Christian institution, my academic studies in Bible, theology, and languages have helped me work with primary texts and practice careful interpretation.

Why I want to teach at a classical school: While I was in college, I began taking classes in Bible, theology, and languages. As I was in those classes, I realized it is possible to not only know and understand the Scriptures, but to delight in the Scriptures and the God who wrote it. I owe a great deal of thanks to my teachers for helping me in that regard, and my goal is to help students see that Scripture is a fountain of delight. I think a helpful aspect of classical Christian education is the ability to shape both the mind and the affections through teaching.
