Interests and Philosophy

Hobbies, Interests, and Family: I have a wife, Emily, and two children – Abigail (2) and Ezra (7 months). I enjoy reading, especially on subjects related to Old Testament scholarship, spending time with family, hiking, playing guitar, and just being outdoors.

Top 5 Books: On Obligations – Cicero
The Consolation of Philosophy – Boethius
Confessions – Augustine
The Odyssey

Top 3 Books: The Torah: A Social Science Commentary by John Van Seters. This short but helpful book I have read as part of research for my Master’s Thesis, which I intend to submit by the end of March. The first half covers in brevity the history of the study of the origins of the Pentateuch and the second half covers Seters’ own views, most notably that Deuteronomy was the first book of the Pentateuch written, and that Genesis-Numbers was written as a prologue to it.

Michael Morales’ Commentary on Numbers: Again, I read this text as part of my research for my thesis, but reading this 1,000 page commentary informed me well beyond the scope of my paper. Reading this text in its entirety opened my mind to the riches of the Book of Numbers found in each pericope, law, and narrative.

Beowulf – While I’ve read many books over the past month for my thesis, I have also recently finished reading through Beowulf with my Humanities class.

Most Influential Books: The Bible
Who Shall Ascend the Mountain of the Lord? by Michael Morales
On Obligations – Cicero
The Temple and the Church’s Mission – Greg Beale
The Religious Affections – Jonathan Edwards
Institutes of the Christian Religion – John Calvin

Preferred Denomination Type: Reformed

Current Church: Trinity Presbyterian Church

Current Church Denomination: Presbyterian Church of America (PCA)

Current Church Membership: Yes

Current Church Attendance: Weekly

Support of Traditional Marriage: Yes

Theology: In general, I am classically reformed; I consider myself a theologically conservative Christian, and in general subscribe to the Three Forms of Unity.

Belief in the inerrancy of Scripture?: Yes

Notes on Scripture: I do affirm Biblical inerrancy, although I do believe infallibility to be a more accurate term to describe the prompt’s definition. I do seem to be more open to source-critical theories than many within conservative circles, which some see as denigrating towards inerrancy.

Additional Information

Additional classical training: For the most part, classical training includes PD and books read at the school I am currently employed at.

Why I want to teach at a classical school: I believe in the efficacy of classical pedagogy, its emphasis on the formation of the soul, and its commitment to the glory of God. I have seen the results of classical education, which I have been quite impressed by.
