Position Information

Position desired: Teacher

Subjects you can teach: 7-12 Theology Teacher, Greek Teacher

Willing to relocate to: Midwest

Summary:

My heart has been captivated ever since I learned about the Classical Christian model of education. My love for reading Greek led me not only read the Scriptures more deeply, it also introduced me to early Christian writers such as Polycarp, Irenaeus, and Ignatius. This love for reading our Christian Fathers and the Scriptures only grew in me as I read more broadly during my seminary education. Ever since then, I have had an eager desire to impart this wisdom to others through teaching.

Interests and Philosophy

Hobbies, Interests, and Family: I love to read, go on hikes, workout, and spend time with family. My interests with respect to reading largely involve Church History, Christian writers (both past and present), and some works of fiction. My wife and I currently have three children, Abigail, Ezra, and Annelise.

Top 5 Books: 1. Saint Augustine's "City of God"
2. Fyodor Dostoevsky's "The Brothers Karamozov"
3. Jaroslav Pelikan's five-part work "The Christian Tradition: A History of the Development of Doctrine"
4. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger's "The Spirit of the Liturgy"
5. Saint Basil of Caesarea's "On the Holy Spirit"

Top 3 Books: 1. Fyodor Doestoevsky's The Brothers Karamozov
I chose this partially because it was gifted to me as a Christmas gift last year and also because it was recommended to me by multiple friends who had read the work.
2. Saint John Chrysostom's Homilies on the Gospel of John
I chose this work 1) because I've always had a great love for Saint John Chrysostom as a preacher/teacher and 2) because I'm always interested in reading exegetical works on Holy Scripture, whether it be in the form of homilies or catechetical lectures.
3. Saint Basil of Caesarea's On the Holy Spirit
I chose this work because I've always heard good reviews of it and know how important it is with respect to early Christian teaching on the Divinity of the Holy Spirit.

Most Influential Books: 1. Saint Augustine's "City of God"
2. Jaroslav Pelikan's five-part work "The Christian Tradition"
3. Joseph Cardinal Ratzinger's three-part work "Jesus of Nazareth"

Preferred Denomination Type: Eastern Orthodox

Current Church: St. Paul's Lutheran Church

Current Church Denomination: Lutheran

Current Church Membership: Yes

Current Church Attendance: Weekly

Support of Traditional Marriage: Yes

Theology: I am what most would consider conservative in my theological views. I tend to give more weight to what early Christians taught/confessed, whether that be in things like the Creed, etc. On that same note, I tend to have more leanings towards a "high-church" liturgical practice. I support conservative Christian values such as marriage between one man and one woman and the goodness of children.

Belief in the inerrancy of Scripture?: Yes

Notes on Scripture: I believe that God's will for mankind has been sufficiently revealed through His prophets, Apostles, and His Son – i.e., the entirety of Holy Scripture. I don't think that the countless manuscripts that we have and their minor difference in many things obscure that will in any way. I do find it interesting, with respect to Christian thought, to look at the differences in those manuscripts and consider them in light of each individual writer's overall purpose.

Additional Information

Additional classical training: Although I myself did not attend a classical school, I have taken classes on this model, read books on it, and observed various Christian Classical schools and their implementation of this method in their individual congregations. All this has helped me to grasp the thought and purpose of the classical model, which I see as faithfully training children to grow up into intelligent, virtuous citizens – and more so from a Christian perspective, godly Christians.

Why I want to teach at a classical school: I am in full support of what classical Christian education aims at doing, namely forming and shaping children to be godly Christians in a world that is hostile to them. In this day and age as this hostility seems to be increasing, the importance of this work of classical Christian schools will only increase. I greatly desire to contribute to this end, using the gifts and loves that God has given me in service to aiding future generations toward that ultimate goal.
